The Evolution of Canadian Arctic Policies

The Centro Studi Italia Canada returns to the topic of the Arctic with a paper titled “The Evolution of Canadian Arctic Policies” by Director Paolo Quattrocchi and Marco Castriani.
The document follows the work recently published in the collection of contributions “L'Artico sotto la lente dell'Intelligence" for the Osservatorio d'Intelligence sull'Artico (SOCINT), where Paolo Quattrocchi focused on the economic aspects related to the development of Canada’s northern regions.
“The Evolution of Canadian Arctic Strategies” analyzes the Canadian Arctic from a geopolitical perspective, examining the positions taken by Canadian governments from 2006 to the present: from viewing the Arctic solely as a place to exercise sovereignty, to recognizing it as an opportunity for social and economic development, furthering the path of reconciliation with Indigenous populations, and ultimately returning to seeing it as a site for asserting national identity—a strategic northern stronghold not only for Canada but also for its NATO allies.
